Adult Education Tutor

Adult Education, or “Adult Ed,” tutors work with adults who have basic or below basic literacy skills. Adult Education tutors complete an orientation session and a 15-hour training before being matched with students. They then receive follow-up support and the option to attend in-service trainings throughout their tutoring committment. Tutors in this program work with their students at least twice per week, for one hour each session, for a duration of at least one year.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Tutor

ESOL tutors work with adults who want to learn English. These students come to the Literacy Council with a variety of literacy and English language skill levels. ESOL tutors complete an orientation session and a 15-hour training before being matched with students. They then receive follow-up support and the option to attend in-service trainings throughout their tutoring committment. Tutors in this program work with their students at least once per week, for two hours each session, for a duration of at least one year.

Augustine Project® Tutor

Augustine Project® tutors work with children from low-income families who read, write, and/ spell below grade level. Augustine Project® tutors complete an initial orientation and a 70-hour training. They then receive follow-up support and the option to attend in-service trainings throughout their tutoring committment. Tutors in this program work with their students twice per week, for 50 minutes each session. Instead of committing to one year, Augustine Project® tutors commit to providing at least 40 hours of pro-bono tutoring.

Other Ways to Volunteer

For those who can’t make the committment to become a tutor, or for tutors who want to get more involved, we have short-term volunteer opportunities. Volunteers can help out at one of our annual events, like the spring Spelling Bee or the fall Authors for Literacy Dinner and Silent Auction. We also occasionally need office, graphic design, or IT assistance.
