Our Programs – OverviewLearner centered. Life skills-based.The Literacy Council of Buncombe County works with adults to improve basic reading, writing, math, and English language skills in two core programs:
We supplement these programs with an on-site computer lab and other projects, such as the Augustine Project, designed to meet a diversity of student needs and fulfill grant awards. In addition, we actively seek community partnerships with businesses, non-profit agencies, educational institutions, and community organizations to provide a comprehensive menu of adult literacy services throughout Buncombe County. Through individual and small group instruction by trained volunteers, we help our students gain self-confidence and develop self-sufficiency to transform their lives as individuals, parents, workers, and citizens. What makes us successful is the trusted bond that develops between our instructors and our students. At the Literacy Council, one size does not fit all. We meet our students where they are today and provide highly individualized tutoring to fit their needs – whether a learning disability, lack of high school diploma, learning style, or application for citizenship. |
